Personal Experience & Biography

My name is Jonathan Hanslip.  I was born of Jamaican parentage on July 1 1968, in Jamaica, West Indies.  I am the second of a family of six siblings.  We all migrated to the United States when I was eleven years old.

During my childhood, I faced many challenges adapting to a different culture. My perseverance, resilience and unconditional family support enabled me to overcome those obstacles.

After graduating from high school in 1986, I joined the United States Army. I was eighteen years old.  I served ten and half years in the military. Transitioning back to civilian life became very difficult for me and my family. With strong support from The Osborne Association, however, I became gainfully employed at the Harlem Crisis Center for Substance use.

Later, I earned my CASAC-t license and in 2015 I attended Medgar Evers College, where I obtained my bachelor’s degree in social work. I subsequently receive my master’s degree from Columbia University.

I am now employed at the Center for Psychotherapy.  It is an institution that throughout its existence has encouraged and supported deviancy in search of better approaches to healing. As a mental health psychotherapist, I work primarily with male adolescents, youths, and adults who are experiencing mental challenges. I use cognitive techniques that help clients change thoughts, emotions and behaviors that cause problems and distress.
